My first rabbit hunting Video! taped on my farm with our three beagles!
To learn more about Dr. Dunbar’s seminars visit www.jamesandkenneth.com There was a beagle in the UC Berkeley dog behavior study named after Ian’s first wife (Jamie’s mom), Mimi. Mimi the beagle was central to more than one incident that would profoundly shape Ian’s understanding of dog behavior and temperament. It revealed just how fundamentally a dog’s temperament could be changed, especially confronted with the power of the pack. It also led Ian to develop the notion of subliminal bite stimuli, the idea that there can be multiple factors that lead to a sudden explosion of dog aggression. Finally, as a cognitive psychologist Mimi the person provided an incredibly valuable perspective that was instrumental in the development of modern pet dog training, as popularized by Ian and SIRIUS Puppy Training.

Thank you all so much for the awesome comments, @TheSickamoreCULT, a true retriever will not actually “eat” the rabbit, but bring it to the person who trained them, since I am not the one who trained him, he wanted to bring it to his master =)
@Rcs52590, a beagle may be small, but they require A LOT of attention, having three myself, I feel like I am constantly keeping track/training/working with them! It is possible to hunt with just one dog! Just not as fun!

Really brings back memories of my beagles, I also had one that would retrieve. You are a lucky couple to enjoy hunting and beagles together. Wish I still hunted but the beagles are gone now.

You don’t want a beagle that will catch the rabbit but one that will keep them moving. The rabbits will make a circle and you want to be handy the spot where your beagle first started the rabbit. Great video and lots of fun.

so do the dogs kill the rabbit or do they just get it on the run so you get to shoot it? how does it work?

My Bandit dog(beagle) retrieve both rabbits and pheasants as long as he was alone. When I got my second beagle he decided to start consuming what he originally would retrieve. He was also an exceptional fall turkey dog. RIP Bandit 10/10/08

near a fence line/briars/field. I am just curious because I love to hunt, but have never done much rabbit hunting. That bein said we have lots of them at our place, we just spend all our time getting ready for duck season. If you have any feedback as to whether it would be worth my while, it would be much appreciated. thanks.

I am a long time duck/deer/hog hunter from MS. Anyways we have a bunch of land up in the delta but I live in the city in a little apartment. I have been seriously considering getting a beagle because I want a dog I can hunt with, I just don’t have the ability to raise a lab or a hound due to space mostly. I have a bunch of woods near my apt where I can take the pup to play and stuff. I am responsible and love dogs. Anyways I was wondering if it is possible to rabbit hunt with just 1 beagle

very impressed that he brings it back! my beagle mix will just run off, chase and tree – i have to go find him. i have a shepard/pit mix that killed a rabbit, and my mcnab (herding breed) mixed showed her how to bring it back. never trained either, they just know what to do i guess.

do you think the smooth fox terrier might be good rabbit hunters?
I have one, I have a boxer, boxer / rottweiler hybrid and german shepherd hybrid.
when I take a walk to the hill, all killed some rabbits, goats or sheep.
but my smooth fox terrier seems to be not interested, and just mark their territory with urine, while the other dogs smell the way searching for the traces of the dam. do you think? from chile, los andes mountains.

Nice, its important that you have the dog drop what ever he is retrieving before you grab it though.

If you work em early enough and can get them to fetch add some rabbit scent to the training dumby (knotted up sock). I also keep a whole frozen rabbit in a ziplock in the freezer for training/retrieving. It will stay frozen for about 30 mins which is longer than any pups attention span. In the middle of working twp jip pups right now named Dolly and June……ps I agree 110%, its all about the good praise
