My answer to a very popular viewer question: Curbing play-biting/mouthing/nipping is the top priority for new puppy parents. Consistency & a positive, gentle approach allows us to quickly & effectively teach a puppy to make the right choices. The emphasis is on teaching the puppy the appropriate behaviors, instead of correcting them for making reasonable mistakes. Remember that puppies love to interact with their human(s) in all sorts of ways, and learn from every interaction that we have with them. As an alternative to using aversive punishment, this multi-faceted approach allows us to creatively connect with our dogs by employing positive reinforcement and harnessing a relationship that is based on trust & respect. If you like this video, please share it with anyone that you think might find it useful. If you have any other puppy questions/concerns, feel free to leave them in the comments & I will address them in the next puppy training video!

I’m trying the off thing but she keeps biting me and i hurts soo bad. I’ve tried giving her her chew toys she thinks its a game and will start biting me again. I’ve tried the spray bottle, the grabbing of the neck, the OUCH method, and the time out. I dont know what else to do

doesn’t work for all dogs, as the video said. If you did that with my doberman pup, he’d come right back at you harder as if you were a squeak toy. Not all methods work for all dogs, please bear this in mind.

No. The alpha roll was discredited years ago. By the same folks that introduced it to the public, the Monks of New Skeet.

well.. i know it sounds bad but what i did it basically smack my dog’s nose evertime she bited (i also have a german shephard) i didn’t do it to hurt her i did it so she knows that if she bites she will get smacked so after a few months she stopped biting and sometimes she does feel like doing it but when i raise my hand she stops immediatly and she’s 8 months old now

the problem is that i taught the puppy already that she has to sit to get the treat and cannot sniff the treat. so when i try ‘ off ‘, she still thinks the clicker means that she has to sit to get the treat. what do i do???!!!!!impossible dog!

I really like your training methods, and think you are very skilled at speaking well to teach them to us. My only suggestion is that you would show more one on one with the dog. Watching your video is kind of like an audio/visual book. It feels like you’re reading the information to us, then showing a tiny glimpse of video that includes the dog. I’ve read tons of books. I want to see it in action to better understand the interaction.
